Fruit Bearing Trees (Deuteronomy 20:19-20) Commentary

God is peculiarly interested in sparing these trees.  Only the trees that do not bear fruit can be cut down. The others, which produce fruit, are part of God’s provision. See how God’s law accommodates the needs of man? These trees are protected for the sustenance of His people, and for the good of the land. More importantly, these trees are a part of His will.  If all of the fruit bearing trees were cut down, the food supply would be threatened. A lack of discipline among men might see them all destroyed. Why destroy or waste what is freely given to you? Mercy and forgiveness are yours! The acceptance of Jesus bears fruit! Do not cut away at your salvation.
