Jacob’s Dream (Genesis 28) Commentary

Then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him and directed him, “You must not take a wife from the Canaanite women. Jacob, though blessed, must flee- this is the punishment for his deception.  Abraham would not allow a Canaanite wife for Isaac, and Isaac gives this advice to Jacob.   Arise, go to Paddan-aram to the house of Bethuel your mother’s father, and take as your wife from there one of the daughters of Laban your mother’s brother.  And to keep him safe from Esau.  God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples. These were the promises of God to Abraham.

So when Esau saw that the Canaanite women did not please Isaac his father, Esau went to Ishmael and took as his wife, seeking that approval from Isaac, which he felt was lost when Jacob took his blessing.  Ishmael’s hand was against his half-brother Isaac, and yet Esau hastily takes a wife from his people.  People-pleasing can never serve any good, as we should seek to please only God.

Jacob left Beersheba and went toward Haran.   And he came to a certain place and stayed there that night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep. Jacob sleeps with a stone as a pillow, having left comfort behind him. God will find us in our weakest moments.  And he dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. Christ is our ladder, our path to heaven, the Way to the Father, and the Messiah would come from the line of Jacob.  And behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it! By the command of God, doing His Will.  And behold, the Lord stood above it and said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. This is the Lord’s first appearance to Jacob, and He identifies himself as who appeared to Abraham and Isaac.  The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring.  Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed. This is the promise to Abraham and Isaac. Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. No matter what may befall Jacob, God will bring him, and his descendants home, even from the slavery in Egypt.  For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”  The Lord will fulfill his promises, and then a new covenant is made through Christ

Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear, God will provide us with all we need  so that I come again to my father’s house in peace, that He will keep us safe from harm; grant us eternal life   then the Lord shall be my God,  then we should rejoice and worship Him;   and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God’s house.  Our bodies our temples of the Holy Spirit.
