And they bound Jesus- as if he were violent, a criminal, or might escape, though he had gone willingly with them, without struggle. Consider the worthlessness of the bonds, on the Son of God. Yet it was necessary for Jesus to be bound, to show us how we can be freed. Are you the King of the Jews?- The council had to bring Jesus to Pilate with a political crime, and suggested he was the leader of an uprising against Roman rule. Sarcasm, perhaps? Surprise? As Pilate could see no such threat in Jesus, even after Jesus confirms he is what Pilate says. You have said so- This is the only charge Jesus will answer, because it was the only true one. He was silent to the false accusations, not granting them any credence or standing, or even dignifying their lies with a response. Pilate sought to release Jesus, But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas. How easily men can come to hate and despise God when pressured by worldly powers. Have you ever tried to be the voice of reason, and found it impossible to convince the crowd? We now understand the warnings of Christ to Keep Watch. Why, what evil has he done?- They had no answer or justification for their request.
Crucify him- It was a choice to kill Jesus, he had done no wrong, nor did Pilate find wrong in him. But they chose a murderer, and this is not the last time the world chooses a criminal to raise up. In life, we have the choice to reject or accept Jesus. Will must not allow the crowds or powers on earth to influence us- we are accountable. And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him- Jesus submitted to this shame. He could have destroyed them all, ended everything, been done with all of us, but he did not, even while the struck him, spit on him, and embarrassed him. There is nothing Jesus will not do for you.
And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, …. to carry his cross- Jesus was beaten so badly he could not carry it without assistance. And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh- I searched for help on the purpose of this offering, and apparently this was given to the sentenced criminals to dull their senses. And they crucified him- We cannot describe the pain of crucifixion in any understandable fashion. We believe the torment of this death is incomprehensible. Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself, and come down from the cross! And they laugh at him. There is no moment here where Christ is not suffering humiliation.
And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour- For the Light was suffering. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me– From Psalm 20. Some there did not understand the language and thought he called for Elijah. The curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom- The way to God was not blocked. Truly this man was the Son of God!- The manner and events occurring with Christ’s death had convinced the Centurion of his divinity. His death testifies to us of his humility, and of his love for us.
Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died- Having probably sensed in him strength. He had to verify this with the Centurion. Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, would claim the body- this was permitted by God, that the burial of Jesus be respectable and recorded, better to support his resurrection.
