Mark 10 Commentary

It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law- God allowed certain things to take place, but it did not mean they were pleasing to him.  But at the beginning of creation God made them male and female– A Christian marriage is between a man and woman.  Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate– Marriage is a vow before God, a symbolic of the union between Christ and his Church, and should not be taken lightly. Jesus tells us that divorcees remarry they have both committed adultery. This is a serious charge, as Jesus wants us to take our marriage commitments seriously.

People were bringing little children to Jesus- that he may bless them, but the disciples saw this as trivial, as wasting time. Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them- Children should be directed to Christ, not be denied. The earlier the introduction, the safer the child.

What must I do to inherit eternal life?- Following commandments cannot grant you access to heaven. Eternal life is given by faith in Jesus as your savior. We cannot earn it, therefore Christ has paid for us. But to accept his, we must rid of the things that block our acceptance of Christ. Whatever we have placed before Jesus, we must throw out. In the case of the young man, it was his love of his possessions. Jesus looked at him and saw his heart, and challenged him where it would hurt his pride the most. The young man could not proceed. In our troubles, it helps to think of what we have put before Jesus. How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God– Because they cannot let go of their pride or their love of the world. With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God– True.  No one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age- This is a promise!

Again he took the Twelve aside- His chosen were granted this information. We are going up to Jerusalem- The city from which Scribes and Elders had come to test him, to plan his execution. The Son of Man will be delivered– given over to, betrayed to.  They will condemn him to death- there is no doubt, or resistance.  And will hand him over to the Gentiles- Pilate and the Romans.  Three days later he will rise- Conquering death, and those who tried to silence him. For 2,000 years people have continued to try to silence and “kill” Christ, and yet his power has been too great for all who try.

A blind man, Bartimaeus-  A commonly known man it seems.  Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet- as people will when someone prays, but like Bartimaeus, we cannot let our prayers be drowned out by the world. We should profess and pray all the more. Jesus heard his petition, and healed him.

  1. I think that Jesus telling the disciples to “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these” is so important. We need to constantly keep the heart and faith of a child in our own spiritual life but also that we are responsible to help our children keep a pure and faithful heart towards Jesus–so that it will be well for all of us.
