Upcoming Study: The Gospel of Matthew

Matthew’s Gospel was written to a Jewish audience with the purpose of presenting Jesus as the Messiah prophesied by the Old Testament. It was likely composed sometime between 60 and 70 AD, although some date it even earlier, and believe it to be the first gospel written. Although it has similarities to the other gospels, it is a unique portrait of Jesus and his ministry. Matthew is the only gospel to record the  the Sermon on the Mount. The apostle Matthew was identified as the author by early church, and there is little reason to doubt he penned the gospel. Matthew was a tax collector, a profession despised by his contemporaries, not only because of its corruption, but because of its collaboration with the Romans. Matthew, also known as Levi,  answered the call of Jesus to become one of his twelve disciples.  We know little else of him from the scriptures.  Please join us in reading!

Peter Walks on Water (Matthew 14:22-31) Commentary

Jesus shows us by his example that time spent alone with God is invaluable. The troubles of world surround us, beating against like waves. At times we feel we are fighting against the wind. Yet Christ overcame the world.  Jesus walked on water,  just before dawn, as the true light.. The manner in which Jesus approaches us may surprise, even frighten us. It is overwhelming to witness Christ at work.  Such was the case of the disciples, but he quickly assures them.  Peter wanted to go to Jesus.  Lord, if it’s you,  if this is your way, Lord  tell me to come to you on the water. Tell me to follow you. By your power, let me glorify you, and walk in your way. Jesus will not deny us this request. Peter walked on water toward Jesus. The moment Peter fell, is the moment he took his focus off Christ. We can walk through all of our troubles by the power of Christ, We can be forgiven, by the power of Christ. We can have eternal life, through the power of Christ.  If we take our eyes off of Jesus, we find ourselves sinking in anxieties, sinking in guilt and sin, and doubting our salvation. If we cry to Jesus to save us, he will reach out his hand and catch us, and ask us as he did Peter, why we doubted.

The Fall (Genesis 3:1-13) Commentary

Satan is a liar. If our hearts are not guarded, and do not meditate on the Word of God, we find ourselves succeptible to his lies. Rather than trusting and obeying God, Eve let Satan build up her pride. It is the lie of Satan that we hear today, telling us there is no sin, telling us Jesus was not God, telling us Jesus never died and rose again, telling us that there is freedom without God. Satan tries to persuade us that we don’t need God, that instead, we can be gods, and do as we please. This is what Eve began to believe- that there was freedom in disobeying God, and instead we found ourselves held as slaves to sin.  Adam was supposed to be the spirtual head of the family, but he allowed Eve to coerce him. The apostles Paul and Peter very adamant about the role of husbands and wives, that one does not lead the other into sin, and away from Christ.  God was looking for Adam and Eve, but they hid. Our guilt and shame may keep us from approaching God for forgiveness, but God’s mercy is great. Christ’s arms are open, He offers you forgiveness and eternal life.

Seek The Lord (Isaiah 55:1-9) Commentary

“Come, everyone who thirsts,  Whoever has a spiritual thirst; whoever is without a caregiver; whoever is a sinner come to the waters;  To Jesus for forgiveness, to be under the care of God, to be filled with the Holy Spirit;  the water of life and he who has no money,  Blessed are the poor, for theirs is the kingdom of God. (Luke 6:20); Salvation cannot be bought with riches, nor is it denied to the very poor  come, buy and eat!  Not with money, with your heart; Jesus has provided for you, his sacrifice a currency for eternal life  Come, buy wine the blood of Christ, given for you and for many and milk  the spiritual nourishment of the Holy Spirit.

Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread,  Jesus is the bread of life; the Word of God our food
and your labor for that which does not satisfy?   For worldly goods, desires of flesh which bring only a temporary happiness
Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good,
and delight yourselves in rich food.   Listen to God, delight in his love for you
Incline your ear, and come to me;  Incline your heart, your spirit; Whoever can hear, let him hear
hear, that your soul may live;  That you may have eternal life
and I will make with you an everlasting covenant,  through Jesus
my steadfast, sure love for David.  As true and loving as the promises made to David, manifested in Jesus
Behold, I made him a witness to the peoples,  Christ, the messiah, the new covenant, and descendant of David
a leader and commander for the peoples.   Spiritually, above all else; Love God with all your heart

Behold, you shall call a nation that you do not know,  Christ will call the gentiles
and a nation that did not know you shall run to you,  Thirsting for the living water,

because of the Lord your God, and of the Holy One of Israel,  Because God has drawn them
for he has glorified you.  Jesus risen from the dead in glory

“Seek the Lord while he may be found; While his mercy is abundant; before the day of judgement; Before your mortal life ends
call upon him while he is near;   Before He gathers his elect and you are left behind
let the wicked forsake his way,  Let all sinners repent and receive mercy, for the Lord offers salvation
and the unrighteous man his thoughts;  Purify your hearts, sin no more

Let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him,  How merciful is God!
and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.  Having sacrificed His son for us
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,  They are holy, pure; greater in wisdom;
neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.  God’s way is love, His way is perfect

For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.  So we should diligently seek it! Seeking our own way is a path to destruction. Seek the Lord, and find life.
